Brittan Barker is an Assistant Professor at Utah State University in the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education. Dr. Barker is the director of the Spoken Language Processing lab and oversees a multilayer research program that works to better understand how people learn about their world through listening—especially in situations when listening may be particularly challenging (e.g., when listening to a teacher with a foreign accent or listening through a cochlear implant device). The majority of the behavioral experiments conducted in her lab draws from her training in cognitive hearing science and explore the mechanisms and developmental processes underlying human spoken language processing. She is particularly interested in learning about the role that the talker-specific information in the speech signal plays in human listeners’ spoken language processing.

Individuals with hearing loss often struggle to understand speech, particularly when in noisy environments such as restaurants and social gatherings. This difficulty can be very disruptive to communication and can have a profound impact on the life of the individual with hearing loss. The goal of my research is to increase our understanding of both normal and impaired hearing, and to develop techniques to overcome difficulties associated with hearing loss. Specifically, my work focuses on how the peripheral and central auditory systems process and decode speech in complex backgrounds. In addition, I am interested developing and refining techniques to mimic speech-in-noise processes for listeners with hearing loss.
